Choosing A Maui Vacation Rental

December 21st, 2008 by admin

If you are planning a trip to the beautiful Hawaiian island of Maui, you know that one of the most important details for you to work out is where you will be staying. One great option for you to consider is a Maui vacation rental. If you will be staying for an extended period of time then a vacation rental is practically a must. Even if you are staying for only a weekend or so, a vacation rental can be a great option if you plan ahead and book it in advance.

What is a vacation rental?

If you are planning on going to Maui for an extended period of time as opposed to a quick vacation or weekend getaway, you might consider a vacation rental instead. These are a great option for someone looking to spend all or most of the summer in Maui. Obviously, that would get very expensive if you were paying for a hotel the entire time.

What to look for

If you are looking to select a Maui vacation rental, there are several different things that you will want to keep in mind. Once you have these things to look for, it will save you quite a bit of time when it comes to finding the vacation rental property that best suits your needs.

• Ask yourself what you really need and want.
• How many bedrooms do you need?
• How many bathrooms?
• What appliances and amenities do you desire in your rental?
• Do you have a particular “neighborhood” you want to be in or close to?
• Do you want a beachfront property or an available pool?
• How much are you looking to pay?

Asking yourself these important questions will help narrow your search when you set out to find the Maui vacation rental of your dreams. You should also make a list and prioritize it, placing your most important needs first and going down the line until you reach your “wants”. Then try to find a rental with as many of the things on your list as possible while still meeting your budget.

Selecting your rental

There are many real estate companies online that actually let you look up detailed information about the rental you are looking for. You can choose numbers of bedrooms, baths, oceanfront view, pools and other amenities to meet your specifications and then search for vacation rentals that meet those requirements.

You can find luxury rentals, beachfront rentals, affordable homes and much more. You can get a cozy little retreat for a couple or a home big enough for the family. At some places, you can even bring your family dog! You can truly find your “home away from home” if you look around at rental in Maui.

However, you want to be sure you do your research on the place you choose. Unfortunately, there are still sometimes people that might try to rip you off on a rental in Maui or promise that it is in better condition that it actually is. Then when you arrive dissatisfied, you will have a hard time finding someplace else to go. You need to be sure you find out all you can about the owners or leasers and the property before contracting yourself to it.

Homes and Town homes

There are many different locations on Maui that have homes and town homes for rent. If you are looking to stay in Maui for more than just a couple of days then this is an option you might want to consider. You can rent a town home for a month or a couple of months or the entire summer. Rent varies quite a bit according to what type of home you are looking for, where it’s located, the number of rooms and other pertinent info. Your best bet if you are looking to rent a home or town home for your vacation in Maui is probably to contact a real estate agency on the island that specializes in that.

A travel agent can put you into contact with real estate agents and you can also look them up online as most have websites now. You can even see available listings, pictures of home and much more. Some websites even allow you to submit a rental application through the site.

Condominiums

If you can’t find a home or town home that meets your needs or if that is just not quite what you are looking for, then you might consider a condominium. There are many condos and developments that have properties on Maui and many people who rent for the summer or timeshare, etc. This will be a great option to consider if you want a nice place you can stay and feel at home while on vacation in Maui.

116 Degrees in Las Vegas? Atlantic City Option

December 15th, 2008 by admin

So you have planned a trip to Las Vegas, forget that. It hit 116 degrees the other day. As a perpetual tourist let me recommend Atlantic City, a city for lovers over the city that never sleeps in Nevada. At 116 degrees the nighttime lows are well above 100 degrees and you can’t sleep. At 10:00 it was still 107 degrees. Humans do not function well at those temperatures and despite the claim that it is a dry heat so it is okay; well, that is not exactly true. You see in the last 8 years Las Vegas has experienced explosive growth and due to all the shrubbery, lawns, landscaping and golf courses there is significant humidity.

Atlantic City is a great destination point and excellent for couples, as there new promotional advertising says; “Atlantic City is for Lovers.” Las Vegas a over the last decade had concentrated on events and families. But if you want to get away from the kids, Atlantic City is the right ticket. Top name entertainers, great restaurants and outdoor shopping along the boardwalk at a wonderful 85-90 degrees, none of this 116 stuff like in Vegas.

Atlantic City in the last few years has really cleaned up its act, no more crime, graffiti or drugs. Atlantic City’s Redevelopment Project is a complete success and although there are crowds with a few hundred thousands people cruising the boardwalks each weekend, it is manageable and fun. If you haven’t been recently, you will not even recognize the place. New landscaping, walking areas, shopping areas, restaurants; some of the finest in the world, there is more than enough to do. The Famous Trump Casino is there and out on the shore is a beach bar with canopies and down the way is the Tropicana Casino with an attached shopping center mall, clubs and restaurants. The Tropicana sports a casino no less than four football fields worth of gambling excitement and entertainment. Forget this 116 degree stuff, that is insanity, stay cool and go where the lover go. The New Atlantic City is a perfect break from your fast paced life and you deserve it. See you there.

Avoiding Crime When Parking

December 15th, 2008 by admin

Theft and Vandalism

- Wherever possible, provide each dwelling with its own locked garage within the property boundaries. Locked garages outside the boundaries or well-lit and visible common car parks are the next best things.

- Where private garages are not feasible, carport or driveway parking is preferable to grouped parking away from dwellings.

- As a general rule, underground or multi-story car parks should be avoided, as they are breeding grounds for vandalism and crime. If they already exist, limiting entry points and providing them with sturdy locked gates could minimize danger. Alternatively, each resident could be provided with locked gates could minimize danger. Alternatively each resident could be provided with a lockable garage in their own space, with robust, vandal-proof metal doors – garages within garages, so to speak. Or users can be provided with a secure lock or a plastic keycard, which operates electronic doors.

- Grouped car parks should be avoided in high-crime areas. If they cannot be avoided, they should be within view of some dwellings; they should be equipped with sturdy gates or tilt doors, and should never be sited near alleyways.

- Open car parks should be small and within view of dwellings and visitors’ car parks should be clearly identifiable, well lit, and visible from dwellings.

Rape, Assault, Robbery

- To make car parks safer, planners should provide direct access from parking areas to the entrance of dwellings.

- Car parks should be no further than 60 meters from dwellings, and the path should be well lit and free from shrubbery.

- Visitors’ car parks should be well lit, clearly identifiable, and visible from dwellings.

- Access to enclosed car parks should be limited to residents by some form of electronic entry control device if possible.

- If it is desirable to limit access to dwellings, make sure access via car parks is monitored as well.

- In high-crime areas, advanced technological surveillance methods may be needed in car parks. For example, an infrared unit is available which detects the presence of intruders – but not cats and dogs – by body heat, and automatically switches on all lights in the car park and turns them off after 15 to 20 minutes.

Hello from New York City (7) – The final day: Brooklyn’s Prospect Park and Manhattan’s Washington Sq

December 10th, 2008 by admin

Yesterday was our last day in New York City and our flight left at 7:57 pm, so we figured we’d store our luggage at the B&B for a few hours and head out one more time for one more round of urban exploration.

Well, one area we hadn’t seen much yet was Brooklyn (other than Coney Island which we explored on Friday). We really liked Brooklyn, formerly a sleepy suburban area, which has has nicely matured into one of the most desirable neighbourhoods in New York City, no wonder, thanks to its stately architecture, multicultural shopping areas and green mature trees in many areas.

Our beloved Q train got us to Prospect Park, another masterpiece by landscape designer Frederick Law Olmstead, although this exhibit is a lot wilder and more natural than its Central Park counterpart. Although the day was a bit on the cool side, there were tons of people jogging, biking, walking and Prospect Park, just like its big cousin in Manhattan, has big fields with multiple baseball diamonds and soccer fields. The action was in full swing and we caught a live performance by a Mexican mariachi band, fronted by a young girl who was literally singing her heart out.

At the north end of Prospect Park is Grand Army Plaza, which is dominated by a massive Civil War memorial arch. Across from the arch is the Brooklyn Public Library, opened in 1941 in a late Art Deco style, and now blocked off for some renovations. Just around the corner is the Brooklyn Botanical Garden and the monumental Brooklyn Museum of Art.

But we had no time to explore these areas further, we only had a less than a couple of hours left before we had to pick up our luggage to head to the airport. Off we went and hopped onto another subway to head towards Washington Square Park, one area that I had definitely wanted to see.

It was a little quiet there on this cloudy and cool day and the Washington Arch, compared to other monuments, seemed a little diminuitive. We had a quick pizza in one of the cheap student eateries around New York University and got back to the subway. However, we realized we were on the wrong platform (for northbound trains), so we headed back out the subway to reenter on the correct side.

Guess what – our metro transit card didn’t let us back in! The display said “Just used” and there was no way we could get back in at a different entrance at the same subway station. I guess that’s a built-in mechanism to safeguard against 2 people using the same transit card. So we had to trekk about 20 minutes south to Prince Street and use our metro card there. Our $24 transit pass got major use over the last 4.5 days and when we go to NYC again, we’ll definitely pick up another transit pass. Well, at least we won’t make the same mistake again to swipe the card and then exit the subway station…

Just after 2:30 pm we picked up our luggage at the B&B and spent the next 2 hours discovering a new subway line (the N line) which we caught all the way to Astoria Boulevard, where we picked up the M60 bus to get to LaGuardia airport. It took us a couple of hours, but it was great to get one last ride through the New York City neighbourhoods.

After being thoroughly searched, patted down, having my shoes x-rayed and otherwise being inspected, we finally got on our American Airlines ride back home to Toronto and saw one last vista at dusk of the City that never sleeps.

We will return…….

Borneo – Exotic Island Paradise

December 9th, 2008 by admin

SABAH is Malaysia’s premier nature adventure destination situated in the northern tip of Borneo Island, the third largest island in the world. Sabah is popular for its wildlife conservation attractions, rain forest, surrounding nature and islands, beach resorts, tropical white sandy beaches, crystal clear water, and its warm and friendly people. If you are thinking of visiting Borneo, these places of interest and activities will whet your appetite!

Mount Kinabalu

Let me begin with my favorite place and definitely not to be missed if you are visiting Borneo, Mt. Kinabalu (4,093m). It is the summit of Borneo and the tallest mountain in South East Asia. This mountain is sacred to the locals. Thousands from around the world have trekked to its peak. At the feet of this mountain is Kinabalu National Park, a botanical paradise where rare plants are found: rare orchids, nepenthes pitcher plants and the rafflesia, the largest flower in the world.

Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre

If you haven’t heard yet, the most popular native of Borneo is the Orang Utan. The world-famous Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre enables visitors to come in close contact with these amazing animals. This sanctuary allows visitors to witness an exciting conservation programme in action. Set in 43 square km of beautiful rainforest, the sanctuary helps once captive Orang Utans learn to fend for themselves in the wild. Watch how these orphaned Orang Utans being taught to climb, and then go to a platform where you can witness them coming in from within the forest for their daily meals of milk and bananas.

Danum Valley Rain Forest

If nature is close to your heart, then this next destination I am going to introduce you is a must visit, Danum Valley. Danum Valley is nestled deep in the rain forest of Borneo where nature is at its most pristine. As you travel deeper and deeper into the jungle, you will suddenly come across a magical paradise of the Borneo Rainforest Lodge (BRL), erected overlooking the magnificent setting of the Segama River and flanked by tall hill ranges. BRL is an impressive resort, designed by naturalists and built on stilts using traditional timber materials, and has the comfort of a 3-Star Hotel. I totally recommend Danum Valley to those who yearn to see wildlife in a primeval Borneo rainforest – the rare Sumatran rhino, proboscis monkeys, Orang Utan, elephants and over 275 species of birds.

Tunku Abdul Rahman Island Park

When you think you have enough of sightseeing and you want to take a day’s break idling around to charge your energy, then I suggest you take a 30-minute boat trip to Tunku Abdul Rahman Park. The park is made up of five beautiful islands and is a well-known sanctuary where peace and tranquility prevails. The tropical white sandy beaches are ideal for relaxing and tanning. The crystal clear water is fantastic if you fancy snorkeling or watching the sea lives and corals. The park is also a great spot for a BBQ picnic under the long hours of golden sunshine. Other activities include windsurfing, fishing, parasailing, kayaking and bird watching.

Golfing Holidays

If golf is your sport, then try the numerous high quality golf courses in Sabah. One of the courses as described by its designer – “I had to create a masterpiece by combining the natural splendor of the mountains and the seas, with ingenious architecture, and create a first class championship course to provide an enjoyable, yet challenging game for top professional golfers and amateurs alike” – Graham Marsh. Enough words said for the quality of golf courses here.

White-Water Rafting

For the true adventure seeker looking for an adrenaline-pumping activity, Sabah offers some of the most exhilarating thrills in the world. My scariest experience, only because I am not a good swimmer, is white-water rafting down the Padas River (a grade-3 river). Whilst trying to negotiate the rapids along this raging river for a distance of about 5 kilometers, do enjoy the breathtaking view that the surrounding rain forest does offer. However, be warned, don’t take your eyes off the rapids and waves too long!

Scuba Diving

Off the North Eastern coast of Borneo lies a tiny jewel of an island, Sipadan, with a marine ecosystem so perfect and unique that it is world renowned as one of the best dive spots in the world. Sipadan Island rises as a pristine Coral Sea mount, 650 meters from the floor of the Sulawesi Sea. This pinnacle off the eastern coast of Borneo is an oceanic magnet for marine life. As soon as you enter the crystal clear waters of Sipadan Island, you’ll understand why you have endured a journey that has taken you halfway around the world. As you begin to descend into this tropical water, you’ll also understand why the World Wildlife Fund says, “No other spot on the planet has more marine life than this island.”
