City Break to Budapest

January 19th, 2009 by admin

City Break to Budapest

Anyone who has been to Budapest will know exactly what makes it one of Europe’s best-loved destinations; you’re really getting two cities for the price of one. Bisected by the mighty Danube the city has something of a split personality. On the west side of the river is historic Buda; the ancient heart of the capital. On the east side is industrious Pest; defined by handsome boulevards and the familiar sights and sounds of European commerce.

Each side of the Danube has its own temptations: To the west hilly Buda corrals together some of the city’s finest monuments with the Roman ruins at buda providing the obvious historical starting point. For a lesson in medieval architecture wander the cat’s cradle of narrow streets that surround the picturesque castle district. Keep an eye open for the Fisherman’s Bastion; a group of seven towers that symbolise each of the seven Magyar tribes that founded the nation.

On the east bank of the Danube is low-lying Pest; the capital’s business and administrative centre and the country’s economic powerhouse. Besides the impressive neo-Gothic Parliament building you’ll find an impressive collection of department stores, boutiques and markets selling everything from antiquarian books to lace tablecloths. However, it’s after dark that Pest really comes into its own; when the myriad of bars and all-night clubs begin to wake up.

Budapest is a pedestrian-friendly city and most of the ’sights’ can be easily reached on foot. However, if you fancy something different then head for Margaret Island and hire a bringo; the Hungarian interpretation of a tandem bicycle.

After an afternoon in the saddle there’s no better way to unwind than in one of the city’s fabled public baths. There are more than thirty thermal springs scattered throughout the city, but they don’t come any grander than the stunning art nouveau spa in the Gellért Hotel. Admittedly admission is pricey, but the experience is unforgettable. Anyone traveling on a tight budget should head to the Széchenyi Thermal Baths on the Pest side of the river.

Budapest is the richest capital in hot water springs in the world. That’s why it is often described as a city of baths. The underground waters and springs of Budapest have very important role in the life of the city. The mineral and medicinal waters contain various minerals. The water temperature varies between 14 C and 96 C. These springs are used both to replenish the waters of medicinal baths and open air pools and also for drinking therapies. These springs come from 600-1000m deep along an 80km long geological break line.

These hot waters have been known since the Romans era (2nd – 3rd century), and were often used for threat for rheumatic disease from the 13th century. Under the Turkish occupation (16th – 17th centuries) a lot of baths were built and were used for essential washing. Evilia Chelebi, a Turkish traveler, mentioned these baths among others. The next growth in Budapest’s bath culture is connected to the Hungarian Millennium at the end of 19th century.

The Kiraly (King) Bath is one of the most important Turkish buildings of the town. Arslan Pasha began to build it in 1566 and Pasha Mustapha of Sokol finished it in 1570. The original Turkish baths were covered with one larger and three smaller cupolas. The Fo street wing of the baths was built in classicist style in 1826. The Kiraly Bath has been operating continuously for more than 400 years.

The Rudas Bath. The Turkish repaired the first medieval building in 1566 by Mustapha of Sokol, Pasha of Buda. The octagonal basin of the bath is surrounded by octagonal arcades and topped by hemispherical cupola. In the 19th century a steam bath and a new building was added. This was the first covered swimming pool in Budapest. The oldest Turkish part of the bath is unique in this part of Europe.

The Grand Hotel Gellert and the Gellert Bath, a natural mud pit, once occupied the site of the present bath and was well known for its healing properties even in the Middle Ages. Buildings of the hotel and baths date back to the 1910s but have been modernised several times. The medicinal baths, where a hydro-therapeutical institute operates under medical supervision, adjoins the hotel building. The covered swimming pool and the open-air swimming pool with artificial waves are also popular features of ‘the Gellert’.

Nowadays the hot waters play an important role in health and tourism as well.

Fantastic Early Season Snowfalls for the French Alps

January 18th, 2009 by admin

Climate change and the global downturn, these double apocalypse have saved the European Alps, at any rate for this Christmas. On the other hand it could have been so entirely contrary. Prior to the holidays hamlets in the Les Houches locale were cut off as heavy snow rained down. Dual carriage way passes such as the important Col du Les Menuires were cut. In that location there was no mains or telephones, locals were moved out to temporary dwellings, it seemed as if it were a double of 1998.

It seems that all publicity is good publicity. Avoriaz featured nightly on national news bulletins. As soon as mains was fixed inquiries began to come in, pulled in by the superior snow.

Meribel and neigboring Les Arcs have nearly four meters base on the higher slopes at 2500 meters altitude and 2.5 m at the bottom of the resorts. At the moment a record for the French Alps. Les Gets states that there is 3 meters at the the highest point of the resort. Unfortunately a snow drift has demolished a pylon of the drag lift which serves the sector. They are out of action until the end of January.

In other resorts in the European Alps reservations have increased 15% in La Grave, Chamonix and Savoie. Les Orres has 2% tenancy and sold a record number of passes last Sunday. This is great for luxury ski chalets and large ski businesses.

The bar is located on Pattaya Beach Rd so it’s the ideal location to call in for afternoon drink or to spend your evening. But whatever the seedy side of Pattaya’s nightlife is like, the city is still one of Thailand’s more popular beach resort communities. With such beginnings, its hardly surprising that Pattaya quickly gained an image as one of Thailand’s seedier beach resorts. Today Pattaya is Thailand’s premier beach resort and attracts annually more than a million tourists from all over the world. Even in the very heart of Pattaya you will be able to find long stretches of clean and sandy beach. Gift Basket Heaven

January 15th, 2009 by admin

I love receiving gifts, and let’s face it…who on earth doesn’t. Getting flowers from my husband always makes me feel special. The cards I get from the kids on my birthday and the holidays are precious to me. Still, there is one gift I look forward to more than any other. I have an aunt who I have always been very close to and who sends me a gift basket every year for Christmas. In over ten years of receiving gift baskets from her, I have never had the same basket twice and I have never felt anything less than sheer joy over what she sends. I have had gourmet gift baskets of meats, cheeses and crackers, chocolate gift baskets, wine gift baskets, home spa products baskets and many others. I guess I just really enjoy the fact that it’s so many gifts in one. There’s something incredibly special about opening a gift and being presented with a wonderful array of products to choose from.

No matter what the theme is, I feel like a kid in a candy store. Each year, the hardest thing for me to decide is what to try first. Over the years, I have come to look forward to and enjoy the gift baskets more than any other gift I receive. Last Christmas, my aunt ordered the basket late and it arrived a few days after the holiday. Despite all the wonderful gifts I received from friends and family, I really missed having a gift basket. It felt as though something I enjoyed so much for so long was absent. When it finally arrived, it was like Christmas all over again for me. Since my aunt started sending me gift baskets over a decade ago, I have sent her one each year as well. We always talk after the holidays about what we enjoyed the most. I think we’re both addicted to them. In recent years, I started sending them to other friends and family. Never before have I felt so sure that my gifts were well received as I do now.

Everyone seems to love them and I get a lot praise over my choices. I think people enjoy sampling items that they might not think to buy or that are unavailable is a real treat. Personally, one of my all time-favorites was a selection of Swiss chocolates that were better than anything I’d ever tasted here in the States. I still think that if I had never tasted them, I wouldn’t know just how delicious chocolate could be.

The next time you are wondering what to send for a gift, I recommend a gift basket. You’ll be surprised at how much it will be appreciated and enjoyed.

Educational Factory Tours For A Magical Family Vacation

January 14th, 2009 by admin

When was the last time you saw the words “family fun”, “educational”, and “free” in the same sentence? You can find just that in Nottingham, PA, just outside Philadelphia, PA or Balitmore, MD. Whether you live near those areas and are looking for a family day trip, or want to have a unique experience while on vacation, this factory tour is a must.

When you go to visit the Herr’s Snack Food Factory, you will get to experience a fun-filled (for the whole family) morning or afternoon of educational information, with a little bit of high tech thrown in… all for free. Before the tour begins you receive the behind-the-scenes history and background of Herr’s. You will also be introduced to your “special and unique tour guides”, who will be with you for your entire visit.

The tour is a fascinating and exciting experience for kids and adults alike. With your personal guides and the accompanying videos, this also makes it ideal for large groups.

In this state-of-the-art plant, you’ll get the chance to watch as machines and ovens make thousands of snack foods, including their famous potato chips, pretzels, corn chips, cheese curls, popcorn, and much, much more. The tour starts with an award winning video in which the Herr’s mascot, Chipper the Chipmunk takes you on a tour.

Next stop is the real factory, where you’ll be able to actually see how snacks are made. Watch pretzel twists getting twisted and then baked in humongous ovens. You will learn how chips are made from start to finish. Get ready to be amazed as you watch the entire process. Beginning with the loading of the raw ingredients through slicing, cooking, seasoning and bagging, and how the chips end up in the stores. It’s mesmerizing to watch the machines doing all the work, and to see how much work really goes into a potato chip, before it hits your tastebuds.

The best part about the entire tour is that you’ll be able to taste potato chips hot and fresh off the conveyer belt. Keep in mind that you are experiencing the real deal here. This is the actual factory. You are seeing actual workers, do what they do best, making great tasting potato chips and other snacks perfectly. The tour will give you a front seat type of experience, which has been specially designed with methods and processes that’s sure to impress kids and adults alike. You’ll be able to impress your friends with trivia, like what the differences are between a “chip” potato and a regular potato. And how pretzels are “twisted.”

When you plan your day, go in the morning and plan to stay for lunch. The menu is varied with enough choices to suit everyone’s tastes, and the food is good. From small to big groups, the lunchroom is roomy enough to accommodate your needs. Call for tour schedule: (800) 284-7488 Age Limits: None. Cost: Free. Reservations are strongly suggested, but walk-ins will be accommodated if space permits.

Eurostar and the Channel Tunnel

January 12th, 2009 by admin

Utilizing the Eurostar train the $15 billion Channel Tunnel makes the old dream of a ground link between Great Britain and continental Europe a reality for the first time since the Ice Ages. Nicknamed the “Chunnel” by some and known to the French as “le tunnel sous la Manche”, it consists of 3 interconnected tubes: one rail track each way plus the service tunnel. 31 miles long, of which 23 miles are under water, its average depth is 150 feet under the seabed. The channel crossing time for Eurostar is only 17 minutes.

A few factoids about the Channel Tunnel:

*First suggested by a French engineer in1802 he envisioned travellers making the journey by horse and carriage, with lanterns to light the way.

*Started in 1987, tunneling completed in 1994.

*95 miles of tunnels were dug by nearly 13,000 engineers, technicians and workers.

*The volume of rubble removed from the tunnel is three times greater than that of the Cheops Pyramid in Egypt and as it was dumped on the UK side, it has increased the size of Britain by 90 acres. Equivalent to 68 football fields, this area has been made into a park.

Eurostar trains travel at high speeds in France and on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link where the tracks are modern and custom-made for the standard TGV cruising speed of 300 km/h (186 mph), and within the tunnel at up to 160 km/h (100 mph). The first section of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, between the tunnel & Ebbsfleet in North Kent, opened in 2003. Until the second section between Ebbsfleet and St Pancras opens in 2007, Eurostar trains use ‘traditional’ lines for the final part of the journey into Waterloo, running at much lower speeds. After 2007, the time from London to Paris will drop to 2 hours.

Of more immediate interest to travellers going from Big Ben to the Eiffel Tower might be that the trip takes 3 hours with 15 trains a day. Or you can take the Eurostar to Brussels, again 3 hours with 10 trains a day. The actual tunnel crossing is a 17 minute black, silent, 100 mph, uneventful ride. It is actually faster than flying and much easier.

There are three ticket classes, Premium First Class, First Class, and Second Class. First Class provides you with either dinner or breakfast, while the Premium Class adds such niceties as Eurostar Lounge privileges, exclusive compartment, a taxi on arrival, but at a price, nearly twice that of Second Class. Seniors over 60 get a discount, about $100 US off Regular First Class.

Be aware that the Second Class can sell out. Ideally buy your tickets before leaving USA or Canada through your travel agent. You can compare prices at: eurostar.co.uk or at raileurope.com. If you have definite dates, etc., you can book by calling 800-eurostar. For maximum spontaneity you can also buy your ticket at any major train station in Europe. As always with tickets and rates, there are specials available, so be sure to ask. Besides Seniors discounts, Eurostar has promotions like Fun-Days and Leisure Round trips. For example, the “Leisure Round-Trip 60″ Second Class actually costs less than the Regular Second Class One Way.

There is also a bus option. Eurolines offers a one way ticket for about 84 Euros from London to Paris in nine hours. But be careful which bus you book, one goes to Paris via Brussels, that’s nearly fifteen hours, which might be too much of a good thing!

The Channel Tunnel and the Eurostar has changed the links between Europe and Britain. It has certainly been busy. In 2004, 7,276,675 passengers traveled through the tunnel on Eurostar while in the same year Eurotunnel carried 2,101,323 cars, 1,281,207 trucks and 63,467 coaches on its shuttle trains. For all this, it is still operating seriously in the red and probably will continue to do so for the next two decades. Operating at a deficit or not, it is most unlikely that it will close, too many people use it and there’s too much individual ego and too many national egos at stake.

On a Spiritual Trail to India

January 11th, 2009 by admin

Sufis, saints and mystics have enamored travelers to India since time immemorial. Even today many spiritually inclined tourists back pack and set on a soulful journey. India presents a plethora of tranquil destinations that set many a fickle mind into complete calm. For the faithful, it is God’s love, for the rational it’s tranquility and peace.

Spirituality transcends religion. It has hardly anything to do with faith. It is as free as a bird. India may help you attain spirituality on the banks of its holy rivers, in a quiet corner of an ancient monument, in a Sufi shrine, on the bank of a holy pond, in a monastery, in the foothills of the Himalayas or perhaps in the smiles of wretched children.

You can see sun rise as the first rays of sun kiss the morning waters of the Ganges. Roam through narrow winding streets of Varanasi or travel a few kilometers to Sarnath, where the Buddha set the ‘Wheel of Dharma’ rolling by preaching his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. Travel further north and you will find yourself in Haridwar, one the sites of the Kumb Mela.

About 20 kilometers from Haridwar is Rishikesh, the gateway to the char dhams of Uttaranchal. Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath are the char dhams, which are located in upper reaches of the Garhwal Himalayas. All the four dhams are about 200-350 kilometers from Rishikesh and are well connected by metallic road. At places road is narrow and bumpy but work is on to widened the roads.

Leh Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir and Sikkim in the north-east are other two wonderful tourist destination for the spiritually inclined. Both destinations have monasteries and boasts of strong Buddhist connection. Rumtek Monastery is about 24 kilometers from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. Though barren but Leh Ladakh is beautiful.

A favorite among trekkers and adventure travelers, Leh Ladakh is a fine adventure tourist destination.

No matter, where you go in India, the country provides enough reasons to reflect and introspect.

The Hidden Treasure of North Africa

January 11th, 2009 by admin

Morocco can be one of most fascinating places to visit in the
entire Arab world. It is definitely a place that is a hidden
treasure for travelers who are looking for non-traditional
places to go. As with any underdeveloped country, there are
dozens of nuances that one must know before making one’s trip to
such a locale. I had the distinct privilege of going recently
and actually living with the Moroccan people. Whether it’s the
amazing architecture or the delicious food you will be the
delighted by all the activities that are available to tourists.
I suggest that you take the time to visit several cities rather
than just one since each city has something different to offer.
The Fes Medina is one of the oldest cities in the world. It is a
shopper’s paradise indeed. Price-gouging is such a common
phenomena towards tourists that it is just ridiculous. If you
don’t play your cards right you can easily get ripped off by any
Moroccan vendor. Marrakesh is an extremely tourist-friendly
city that can without question be the highlight of anyone’s trip
since it is also the country’s second largest city. The
architecture is absolutely breath-taking and you will see that
opportunities for pictures are endless if you know where to go.
There are lots of different approaches to planning your trip.
Please don’t take any advice from a travel agent who has never
been there. There are very few people who will actually watch
out for your interests. Take the time to do a little bit of
homework and your trip will be a homerun. Even if you are
planning a trip to Spain and you choose to visit the southern
region of the country, you will see that making the trip across
the straits of Gibraltar into North Africa is definitely an
option that you want to consider. Spending a day or two in
Morocco can be a nice change from being in Spain the entire
time. You must remember that Morocco is less geared to tourism
than the majority of Western Europe. Therefore not knowing how
to approach your trip can result in disaster. A little bit of
know-how can result in discovering one of the most interesting
places on the planet. Morocco is filled with sites that have
tremendous historical significance as well as breathtaking
views. Better yet check out one of the many castles located
throughout the country. The rolling hills as well as some of the
unknown beaches may also be worth a look. If you are planning a
trip to Morocco you absolutely must check out

crucial to making your trip a smash hit.
