Labour MP in Charge of the Digital Economy Bill Resigns

February 17th, 2010 by admin

The UK government has embarked upon an ambitious plan to move towards a totally digital society. As a positive step towards that, the Digital Economy Bill has been drafted and was about to be presented in the House of Commons. Unfortunately Mr. Sion Simon, MP of the Labour Party, has announced his decision to resign from his position. Sion Simon was the person responsible for the placing this bill in the House of Commons and now his resignation has definitely made matters worse.

The bill proposed providing broadband connections across the country with at least 2MB speed. There are also provisions in the Bill to tackle online piracy which is a big threat to the market dependent on broadband internet connections. The bill is a culmination of the Digital Britain report written by Stephen Carter. Stephen Carter also resigned from his position and now this resignation by Sion Simon makes the passage of the Bill in the House of Commons even more doubtful.

Jeremy Hunt the so- called Culture Secretary has openly criticised this decision of Sion Simon as a complete farce. He has gone to the extent of questioning the state of affairs in the Labour Party.

Sion Simon was the Junior Minister for Creative Ministries in the Department of Culture, Media and Sports and will leave his position by the end of this month. His website has an answer posted by him. According to him being a minister is not going to solve the problems being faced by the people. Nine years of experience as a minister has brought in the realisation that the problems faced by Birmingham will not be solved at the Whitehall or the Westminster. They should be tackled by going back to the cities
